Conte to navigate January with little backing

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte’s job will have been made just a little bit more difficult in his first season with the north London giants after the former Italian international is set to receive minimal backing in the transfer market during the January window.

The reality of the situation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was mentioned by Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold via his personal Youtube channel where he mentions that he was personally informed that the club are not prepared to allocate any large sum of money for Conte to spend during the winter window.

It is a frustrating body blow for Spurs as they look to remain back on track after their disappointing start to the 2021-22 season under Nuno Espírito Santo; a start that current boss Antonio Conte has done exceptionally well to correct.

But a lack of spending could expose the club’s lack of depth in key areas of the squad at current despite recent links with interest in a number of players, including SSC Napoli’s Italian international forward Lorenzo Insigne.

Lack of depth and options to expose Tottenham?

At the time of writing, Tottenham has taken ten points from a possible twelve in their recent Premier League outings and has given themselves a solid platform under Antonio Conte to make a fresh assault on the top four places.

With two matches in hand, Spurs are just three points off West Ham in 4th, while being able to leapfrog both Arsenal and Manchester United if results go their way.

But their inability to provide Conte with multiple valuable – and badly needed – reinforcements in the winter window could come back to bite given the thin nature of the squad under the former Juventus and Chelsea headmaster.

At the moment there is still no true back-up to key striker Harry Kane, while the midfield relies heavily on just a small handful of assets in Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, and Tanguy Ndombele.

Center-back has also been called into focus after Cristian Romero went down with a hamstring problem, and their remaining options in that spot lack high quality.

Whether they spend or not in the summer remains to be seen but it is undeniable that Tottenham need help this winter.
