Newcastle United have, on Thursday evening, been dealt an altogether untimely blow on the personnel front.

Salah completes the turnaround

Eddie Howe’s men, of course, are currently locked in Premier League action.

Amid a tense relegation dogfight in the English top-flight, the newly-minted Magpies made the daunting trip to Anfield, eyeing just a 2nd three-point haul of the campaign.

And, bizarrely, early in the action on Merseyside, Newcastle appeared well in their way to precisely that.

This came after Jonjo Shelvey took advantage of a heavy touch on the part of Thiago Alcantara in ruthless fashion, directing a sumptuous effort from 20 yards beyond the helpless Alisson:

Order, however, has since been restored.

After Diogo Jota bundled home on the rebound amid controversial circumstances midway through the half, the turnaround was completed by Mo Salah just minutes later, when the Egyptian made no mistake after Sadio Mane’s initial effort was well kept out by Martin Dubravka:

Lewis blow

As alluded to above, though, the misery for Eddie Howe’s troops has not been restricted solely to their latest collapse from a promising position at Anfield.

In addition, Newcastle have been dealt an altogether concerning blow on the personnel front.

This arrived on the quarter of an hour mark, when Jamal Lewis, amid efforts to beat Trent Alexander-Arnold to the end-line, pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring problem.

The Northern Irish international, in turn, was quickly helped from the field of play, ahead of what one can only assume will be an upcoming spell on the sidelines:
