Who is Jonathan David?

Jonathan David is currently plying his trade in Ligue 1 with Lille.

David was signed by Lille in August of 2020 for a fee reported to be just over £24m.

The New York-born hitman went on to enjoy a solid debut campaign in France, netting 13 and assisting three in 37 outings as Lille piped PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

Lille’s form, on the whole, has since dropped off a fair bit, but David has only continued to improve.

In 26 outings across all competitions this term, David has already scored 15 goals. He has also matched his 2020/21 league goal tally in 19 fewer games.

Arsenal handed Jonathan David boost

After an impressive stint in France, David has attracted the attention of Premier League outfit, Arsenal.

The striker was linked with the Gunners earlier this month. And, on Wednesday, David was mentioned by the Evening Standard as one of the players scouted by Arsenal in their search for a centre-forward:

Arsenal have scouted the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jonathan David and Ollie Watkins

Now, Arsenal have been handed a boost in their hunt for David, with his agent confirming that 2021/22 will be the striker’s final season at Lille and that the Premier League and La Liga are the main priorities for David:

“He was very confident from the start. At the time, he absolutely wanted to go to Europe. He didn’t want to consider anything from MLS, even though Vancouver worked hard to sign him.”

“For us, the goal is to finish the season with Lille, but this will be his last season there for several reasons. I think the Premier League is a great option for him. I think he likes Spain a lot too… These two leagues are the main priorities for him, but nothing is being ruled out. You never know with Paris Saint-Germain or the big Italian clubs. It’s normal that all these big clubs are interested in the top scorer in Ligue 1, but I can tell you that, today, there’s no official offer.”
