Torres nears return to Spain with Barcelona

Manchester City forward Ferran Torres is all but signed, sealed, and delivered to Barcelona in a return home to Spain after the Premier League giants refused to stand in his way after Blaugrana boss Xavi labeled him the prime transfer target for January.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Torres to Barcelona is a done deal and will set the club back €55million plus an additional €10million in add-ons. The financial return to City would signal a doubling of their investment in the Spanish international, who arrived from Valencia last summer for €28million.

Earlier today Manchester Evening News reporter Simon Bajkowski stated that City and Barcelona were close to concluding business involving Torres, but tabled the figure at £50million.

But the rapid nature that the move was finalized shows the intent of Barcelona boss Xavi to secure his main transfer target amid continued questions surrounding Barça’s struggles this season both at home and abroad.

Transfer deal highlights focused improvement

With just one loss in their last six La Liga outings (3-2-1), Barcelona is in a better patch of form of late under new boss and former iconic midfielder Xavi but the need for added depth in quality in the first team remains a real one.

From the outset of his tenure, and even before that, Xavi was adamant in his desire to add quality in the wide areas at the Camp Nou and has long harbored an interest in Ferran Torres.

Their targeting of new assets in the market could be set to continue as well after recent links suggest that the club could move for Real Sociedad’s Adnan Januzaj despite the move for Torres in the wake of a rampant injury crisis that has struck the club particularly hard among the forward line.

It may be earlier days in the Xavi reign but thus far he is showing that he is a man that gets what he wants.
