Senegal vs Zimbabwe

The 2022 African Cup of Nations got underway last weekend.

Senegal would play out their first group match of the tournament on Monday afternoon vs Zimbabwe.

Senegal have been drawn in Group B along with Guinea, Malawi and the aforementioned Zimbabwe.

As a result, it was expected that Senegal would top their group and qualify for the knockout rounds with relative ease.

Senegal are one of the favourites to go on and win the competition after reaching the final last time out before losing 1-0 to Algeria.

However, Senegal’s campaign did not get off to the most convincing start on Monday.

They were without no.1 goalkeeper Edouard Mendy after the Chelsea man tested positive for Covid-19.

But it was still expected that Senegal would pick up a win fairly easily given the talent at their disposal.

Liverpool’s Sadio Mane nets winner

In the end, though, Senegal did not score the winning goal until deep into injury time.

They would dominate the tie, but mustered up just three shots on target.

One of those shots came in the dying moments of the game, when Zimbabwe gave away a penalty due to a handball.

Liverpool star Sadio Mane would step up to convert from 12 yards, handing his side a 1-0 win on the day.

Senegal are now top of their group with Guinea and Malawi yet to play their first group game.

Senegal’s next game will take place on Friday the 14th of January vs Guinea, and is expected to see Liverpool teammates Mane and Naby Keita face off.
