Liverpool vs Arsenal

Liverpool are set to play out the first of two League Cup semi-final clashes with Arsenal on Thursday.

The game this week was supposed to be the second leg, which would have given the Merseysiders a home advantage should they have needed it to overcome a deficit or snatch a winner.

However, after a covid outbreak at Liverpool, the first leg was postponed and moved to the 20th of January.

Despite the postponement, Liverpool still remain without the services of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita.

Arsenal, though, have absentees of their own, with Albert Sambi Lokonga set to be the Gunners’ only senior central midfielder available unless Granit Xhaka is able to test negative for covid. Even if he tests negative today, though, the Swiss star is unlikely to be up to match fitness for the game.

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool team news

Ahead of the tie, Jurgen Klopp spoke to the press on Wednesday afternoon.

When doing so, the German provided a team news update on his side and it fairly positive. Trent Alexander-Arnold has trained after testing positve for covid, whilst Andy Robertson is fine after suffering a knock and Harvey Elliott is not too far away from team training.

The only issue for Liverpool is that Divock Origi and Thiago did not train on Tuesday:

“Trent trained y’day, Origi and Thiago didn’t. Everyone else, like always, are available. Harvey Elliott looks promising on the pitch, not too far away from team training. Robbo got a little knock but is fine.”
