Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United stint

Marcus Rashford has, of course, been a mainstay in Manchester United’s side for many years now.

The forward made a big impact on his league debut, netting a brace to help his side secure a win over Arsenal in 2016.

Rashford has since gone on to rack up 286 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils. Across these outings, the 24-year-old has scored 91 and assisted 57.

However, following his return from a shoulder injury, Rashford has seriously struggled for any sort of regular form this term.

He would score two in his first three league games back, but it has been largely downhill from there.

Why is Rashford underperforming?

Rashford has been especially poor in Ralf Rangnick’s system, which generally sees him deployed as one of two strikers next to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rashford had a shocking game vs basement-dwelling Norwich back in December, yet he still completed the 90 minutes.

And, after another dismal outing vs Aston Villa this week, Ralf Rangnick was asked why the academy graduate was underperforming, but the German was not sure:

“Actually I don’t know. I think he’s trying hard. In training he was doing well in the last couple of days, that’s why he was quite rightly in the starting XI.

“I think in the first half we found him quite often, but we also tried to get him into the box. In the second half that was not that often the case and that’s why at the end of the game I decided to make two changes with Anthony Elanga and Jesse Lingard.”

Rashford set for new deal?

Despite his serious decline of late, ESPN report that Manchester United will prioritise a new contract for Marcus Rashford this summer.

This comes despite concerns within the club over the forward’s ongoing search for his best form.

Rashford’s current deal runs until 2023, but United are believed to have the option to extend that by a year.
