Barcelona are said to be prioritising a new deal for centre-back Ronald Araujo

Araujo’s Barcelona stint

Ronald Araujo was signed by Barcelona in August of 2018, leaving Uruguayan outfit Boston River to link up with the club’s B team.

Araujo has gone on to feature 44 times for Barca B, scoring six and assisting three in the process.

Since then, he has been promoted to the club’s senior set-up, and has now become a key cog in La Blaugrana’s backline.

All told, the centre-back has notched 61 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish side, 22 of which have come in the current campaign.

And with Gerard Pique past his best, and players like Samuel Umtiti suffering with persistent injury issues, Araujo has been one of the few bright sparks at the back for Barca of late.

Barcelona prioritising Araujo contract

As a result, it is not at all surprising to see both Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United credited with an interest in the South American.

Araujo, though, is out of contract in the summer of 2023, meaning Barcelona could end up losing him for free if they are not careful.

However, Spanish outlet AS are reporting that Barcelona are prioritising a renewal of Araujo’s contract ‘as soon as possible’.

Elsewhere, the same report from AS links three new central defenders with the Spanish side.

These are Niklas Sule (26), from Bayern Munich, Andreas Christensen (25), from Chelsea, and Matthias Ginter (27), from Borussia Monchengladbach.

All of that trio are out of contract in the summer and all are currently playing outside of Spain, meaning that Barcelona could sign them all to pre-contract agreements before picking them up on a free in July.
