A new leader has emerged in the Everton manager sweepstakes, in the form of Vitor Pereira.
Amid the ongoing search for a replacement for the recently-departed Rafael Benitez, Portuguese tactician Pereira is understood to have held discussions with the hierarchy at Goodison Park on Sunday.
This comes with both Fabio Cannavaro and Roberto Martinez having been ruled out of the running for the post:
Everton are still looking for a new manager. Meeting confirmed with Vitor Pereira, as per @SamiMokbel81_DM – he’s one of the candidates but no final decision made yet. ? #EFC
No big chances for Fabio Cannavaro after last week interview. No way for Roberto Martinez.

Ensuing reports, meanwhile, hint that those in a position of power at Everton were impressed by Pereira’s pitch.
TalkSPORT corroborate the fact that a meeting between the ex-Fenerbahce coach and the Toffees board did indeed take place earlier today.
Not only that, but, significantly, it is added that Pereira is now viewed as the favourite for the job:
Vitor Pereira has emerged as the front-runner to be named as Everton’s new manager, talkSPORT understands.
The two-time Primeira Liga winner with Porto is now the leading candidate to take the job following Rafael Benitez’ sacking.
Latest bookmakers’ odds on Everton’s next manager:

Blues fans take aim
The renewed urgency in the pursuit of a new headmaster on the blue half of Merseyside of course comes fresh on the back of ugly scenes at Goodison Park this past Saturday.
A 1-0 defeat at the hands of Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa resulted in a lengthy post-match protest on the part of the Toffees faithful, adamant that their voices be heard amid a dismal campaign to date.

In turn, it would not be at all surprising to see a definitive announcement on the managerial situation at the club made at some point over the coming week.
