An explanation for why Manchester United did not sign anyone in January has been provided.

Manchester United entered the January window still clearly in need of a few key stars.

A top-quality defensive midfielder will obviously improve the Red Devils a great deal, whilst another centre-back and some younger legs up front would not have gone a miss either.

In the end, though, Ralf Rangnick and co. did not sign a single senior player in the winter window.

But why? Well, as explained by the Manchester Evening News, the absence of a permanent manager, the presence of an interim, a bloated squad and the constraints of the winter window made any January incoming at United a non-starter.

Will Manchester United spend in the summer?

So, will Manchester United be bringing in any names in the summer of 2022?

Well, as per the MEN, a senior Manchester United source said in early January that they start recruitment each year around September time: “We are running processes for our recruitment in the summer.

“We start in September and it starts to really solidify around this time of year, just in case there are ones available who we would want to bring in the summer who are available now. Although that’s a low probability.”

Elsewhere, as covered by 101 last week, it was reported that the Red Devils accept that midfield is the biggest problem in their squad, and that position has been identified as a priority.

So, with no deal done in January, you would have to assume that Manchester United will be in the market for a central midfielder come the summer of 2022 after spending a good nine months looking at targets.
