Napoli star man Victor Osimhen has revealed that Tottenham defender Cristian Romero is one of the toughest opponents he has faced during his career.

The Nigerian forward has netted six times in the Serie A so far this season, as well as 4 times in his 3 Europa League appearances to date, and is reportedly a target for north London rivals Arsenal in the summer.

But, speaking to Italian newspaper Repubblica [Via Football Italia], the Super Eagle revealed that it was Tottenham’s Cristian Romero that he struggled against most, during the Argentine’s time at Atalanta. This was mostly on account for the sheer speed of the 23-year-old, who made the move to Tottenham in the summer.

Asked to name his toughest opponent, Osihmen said:

‘[Cristian] Romero, who is now at Tottenham. He was always faster than me every time we faced each other. The other one is Kalidou Koulibaly, he never let me score in training. When Nigeria were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations, I supported Senegal.’

Romero heading back to his best?

It has been a tough few months for Romero in north London.

The Argentine completed a big-money switch after being named Serie A’s most valuable defender for the 2020-21 season, but has only managed 7 Premier League appearances this campaign so far, due to a number of injuries that have kept him sidelined.

However, he returned to action against Brighton in the FA Cup 4th Round, which provided a timely reminder of just how good he is and can become.

Speaking about the defender ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Southampton, Antonio Conte was quick to praise the Argentine, saying:

‘He’s strong and anticipates, good personality to play with the ball. Good experience, I like him. A lot of space for improvement.’

Can he become a key cornerstone of Tottenham’s defence, and help them into the top 4 in the process?
