An insight into the future of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong has been provided recently.

De Jong signed for FC Barcelona back in the summer of 2019.

The Spanish powerhouse are understood to have paid around £77m to bring the midfielder to the Camp Nou on the back of a starring campaign, in which he helped Ajax reach the semi-final of the Champions League.

Since his move to Catalonia, though, De Jong has struggled to showcase the abilities that made him such a desirable asset for Barcelona in the first place.

Not all of the blame can be put on De Jong for this, though, with Barcelona as a club experiencing something of a crisis, with La Blaugrana now on their 3rd permanent manager since De Jong joined the club.

Amid all this upheaval, it was claimed back in November of 2021 that Barcelona had put Frenkie de Jong up for sale.

Now, however, a fresh update on De Jong’s future has emerged.

As per football.london citing Spanish outlet Sport, Frenkie de Jong has decided to remain with current employers Barcelona and is not set to entertain any offers in the summer and will instead focus on succeeding with the Spanish powerhouse.

Is Frenkie de Jong worth keeping at Barcelona?

Whilst De Jong may wish to stay put at the club, Barcelona need to ask themselves if it is actually worth keeping him around, or should they look to recoup some funds for him?

Barcelona have not had the best of seasons so far, and whilst their squad could be improved in a number of areas, centre midfield is probably their strongest position right now.

Pedri, Gavi and Nico Gonzalez are all young central midfielders who are showcasing they can become top, top talents.

So, whilst De Jong is a decent player, it would probably benefit Barca more to cash in on the Dutchman and give more playing time to the above trio.
