Lionel Messi’s PSG faced off with Real Madrid on the 15th of February in a Round of 16 Champions League clash.

Shortly after the hour mark, PSG were awarded a penalty and Messi would step up to take it.

However, Lionel Messi’s penalty was pretty average and was easily saved.

Following that penalty save it has been revealed that Lionel Messi has matched Thierry Henry’s record for most missed penalties in Champions League history while surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo for most penalty attempts.

An unwanted record to say that least and one that also begs the question, how bad is Lionel Messi at penalties.

What is Lionel Messi’s penalty record for club & country?

The Argentine is arguably one of if not the greatest player to ever grace a football pitch, but it is a fairly common assumption that Messi’s penalty-taking abilities are not that great.

But what is Messi’s penalty record? That information, at least at club level, has now been revealed by the Telegraph who confirm that the South American has, excluding shootouts, scored 84 scored from 110 taken for his clubs, which is a conversion rate of 76.4 per cent.

It is added that, in the past 15 seasons in the top five European leagues, penalties have been scored at a rate of 77.1 per cent – putting Messi within a percentage point of the mean.

For Argentina, meanwhile, 101 have found out that Messi has scored 17 penalties in all competitions, excluding shootouts, and has missed four.

Messi’s penalty record vs Cristiano Ronaldo’s

And for those interested, the Telegraph have also confirmed how Messi’s club penalty record stacks up with Cristiano Ronaldo.

On this occasion it is Ronaldo who comes out on top, converting 85.2 per cent of his club penalties compared to Messi’s 76.4 per cent.

For Portugal, meanwhile, 101 can confirm that Ronaldo has scored 16 penalties and missed seven.
