Scottish champions Rangers etched their names into the history books on Thursday evening, courtesy of a remarkable victory over European heavyweights Borussia Dortmund.

The Glaswegian outfit made the trip to Signal Iduna Park a short time ago, no doubt hopeful of simply keeping the tie alive ahead of next week’s return leg at Ibrox.

When all was said and done, though, the Gers managed that, and so much more.

A scintillating attacking display ultimately saw Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men emerge on the right side of a 4-2 scoreline, courtesy of strikes from all of James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and John Lundstram, followed by an Axel Zagadou own goal.

And, in the process of positioning themselves in the driver’s seat for a spot in the next round of the Europa League, Rangers too secured a noteworthy piece of history.

As per statisticians Opta, the Glaswegian giants have become just the 2nd ever Scottish team to bag four goals in an away fixture against a German opponent, after Hibernian did likewise all the way back in 1955:

BVB faltering

Turning attentions towards Dortmund, though, the inquest will now get underway.

Tonight’s result marked far from the only alarming defeat suffered by Marco Rose’s men of late, with their last outing at Signal Iduna Park having seen BVB ship five at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.

An improved performance up against Borussia Monchengladbach this coming Sunday will therefore be required, amid the club’s ongoing efforts to hunt down Bayern Munich atop the Bundesliga table.
