Luton Town fans are in dreamland.

Welcoming World and European Champions Chelsea to Kennilworth Road in the fifth round of the FA Cup, they took the lead just two minutes into the tie, as a corner was flicked in by Reece Burke, leaving Kepa stranded on his goalline.

Of course, Chelsea are still reeling from the announcement, made just over an hour before kick off, that the club was being sold by owner Roman Abramovich in the face of potential sanctions on the Russian Oligarch imposed following his country’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement, Abramovich told fans:

‘In the current situation, I have therefore taken the decision to sell the Club, as I believe this is in the best interest of the Club, the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners.

‘I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club.’

Such a gesture meant little to Luton fans, however.

Familiar chant rings around

After taking the lead, Luton fans directed their chants and attentions towards the impending change of ownership, placing a twist on the usual ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ chant, and instead opting for the more relevant ‘getting sold in the morning’.

Chants of ‘Roman Abramovich, he left because you are sh*t’ also rang around the buoyant crowd, who will be hoping that their side can hold on and claim a famous victory.
