Liverpool have set a club record after they dispatched Portuguese giants Benfica on Tuesday evening.

The two European powerhouses would clash at the Estadio da Luz in the first of two Champions League quarter-final ties.

It was the away outfit who were clear favourites ahead of the game and, when all was said and done in Lisbon, it was indeed Liverpool who came out on top.

Ibrahima Konate opened the scoring for the Reds 17 minutes in, heading home from an Andy Robertson corner:

Liverpool then doubled their lead less than 20 minutes later when Trent Alexander-Arnold played a sensational ball up the field to Luis Diaz who then found Sadio Mane before the African slotted into an almost open goal:

Benfica would get one back four minutes into the second half in a large part due to Ibrahima Konate’s inability to clear the ball. But Luis Diaz then added the Merseysiders’ third with three minutes of normal time to play to kill the game, and potentially the tie, off.
