Europa Conference League quarter-final roundup

Whilst the Europa Conference League lacked the quality of the Europa League, the competition, in its debut season, produced some enthralling matchups in the last-eight.

The four sides that have made it through to the semi-finals are Leicester City, Roma, Marseille and Feyenoord after they saw off PSV, Bodo/Glimt, PAOK and Slavia Prague.

Upset of the round: Bodo/Glimt 2-Roma 1

Of the four quarter-final ties that took place this year, there was no real upset over two legs.

However, Bodo/Glimt did threaten to cause a major upset when they picked up a 2-1 win over AS Roma in the first leg meeting last week.

Of course, Roma would turn it around in the second leg, picking up a comprehensive 4-0 win, but the previous result was an upset nonetheless.

Game of the quarter-final: PSV 1-Leicester City 2

Whilst Feyenoord and Slavia Prague’s 3-3 draw in their first leg is a contender for game of the round, Leicester’s win over PSV just about edges it.

The reason for this is due to the dramatic nature of Leicester’s win.

The pair played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the King Power, with PSV then taking a 27-minute lead at home in the reverse fixture.

Leicester then struggled to break the Dutch outfit’s defence down and looked set to be heading out of the competition. However, James Maddison netted a 77th-minute equaliser before Ricardo Pereira bagged the winning goal with just two minutes of normal time to play.

Semi-final tie to watch:  Leicester City vs Roma

Both Leicester City and AS Roma have a strong chance of winning this tournament, so it should be the highest quality tie of the semi-finals.

It will also be interesting to see how the in-form Tammy Abraham handles facing an English side for the first time since his move to Rome and, of course, Jose Mourinho is always an entertaining figure to keep an eye on.
