Mikel Arteta has been branded a disgrace by Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Scholes’ comments come after Arsenal and Manchester United clashed at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

Man United needed to pick up a win or at least draw with the Gunners on Saturday to keep their hopes of finishing in the top-four alive.

However, when all was said and done in north London, Man United fell to a 3-1 defeat. Arsenal dominated the early exchanges of the tie with the Red Devils once again looking shocking defensively.

Nuno Tavares opened the scoring three minutes in, running into the box whilst unmarked to tap home Bukayo Saka’s deflected effort. Bukayo Saka then made it two from the penalty spot after he was adjudged to have been brought down in the box by Alex Telles.

The penalty was awarded after the same VAR check ruled out an Eddie Nketiah goal for offside. However, after that VAR check gave Arsenal a penalty, Scholes has labelled Mikel Arteta disgrace for his actions on the sidelines whilst the foul was being checked:

“That brings into question whether it’s a clear and obvious error, which is the only reason it should go to the VAR,” Scholes said.

“It’s a coming together, of course it is. I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He shouldn’t be allowed to do that. If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little. All the players around them as well. That shouldn’t be allowed but it’s a little bit clumsy from Telles.”

Manchester United have bigger problems

Whilst Scholes may have some right to be unhappy with Arteta’s actions, Man United have much bigger problems to deal with right now.

The Manchester outfit are almost certainly set to miss out on the top-four this season and their defence is pretty laughable at this point.

Even World Cup, Champions League and La Liga winner Raphael Varane looks poor in this United backline.
