Former Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has sent a message to Tottenham fans following Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Arsenal at St James’ Park, which effectively decided the Champions League race.

The Gunners headed to the northeast needed a win to keep their destiny in their own hands, but slipped to a tame 2-0 defeat and never really looked like troubling Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in front of a raucous St James’ Park.

And, having gone from being 90 minutes away from Champions League football at the north London derby, they now need Tottenham to lose to already relegated Norwich on the final day of the season. Given the Canaries have managed just one win in their last 15 Premier League games, it would be one of the biggest upsets in recent memory.

So, Arsenal seem consigned to 5th place, and handed Tottenham Champions League football in the process.

Trippier sends Tottenham fans message

And, taking to Instagram, former Spurs defender Trippier rubbed salt further into gaping wounds.

The defender was an unused substitute against the Gunners, but that did not stop him from mocking their Champions League hopes on Social media after the game.

‘Excellent by the lads tonight, once again showing what we are capable of’, he began.

‘I hope you enjoyed that one tonight Spurs’ the defender added.

There is of course no love lost between Trippier and Arsenal, with the defender having taken part in his fair share of north London derbies, and combined with a Bruno Guimaraes goal to finish the game as a contest, he ensured that the Ghosts of the Gunners very much came back to haunt them.
