Like the Golden Boot and Golden Glove, the fight to win the 2021/22 Premier League Playmaker of the Season went down to the final day.
The award is still fairly new and was first introduced for the 2017/8 campaign when it was won by Kevin De Bruyne who managed 16 assists.
Eden Hazard then won it in 2018/19 earning 15, with KDB claiming back his crown in 2019/20 by assisting a record-equalling 20 times.
This was followed by Harry Kane, somewhat bizarrely, becoming the first non-Belgian star to win the award last season when he managed 14 assists.
Kane, though, was not in the running for the award in 2021/22 and neither was De Bruyne.
Instead, ahead of gameweek 38, Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah were fighting it out for the award.
Alexander-Arnold kicked off vs Wolves on 12 assists, one off the all-time record for most assists by a defender in a single season, which is a record held by the Englishman. Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, sat on 13 assists.
Salah did not start vs Wolves, which gave TAA the advantage. However, Salah did come on late in the tie and scored for his side.
Neither of the Egyptian nor Alexander-Arnold provided an assist on Sunday, however, with Thiago assisting Sadio Mane and Joel Matip setting up Salah. As a result, Mo Salah has won the 2021/22 Playmaker of the Season award.
Salah was also named the Premier League Golden Boot winner on Sunday but had to share that award with Tottenham star, Heung-min Son.
