Tottenham could be set to recoup a tidy transfer fee for Giovani Lo Celso.

The Argentine would spend the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan in La Liga with Villarreal.

This came after Lo Celso made just nine appearances for Spurs in the first half of the season, struggling under both Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

Lo Celso went on to be a key figure for Villarreal, making 16 La Liga appearances as Unai Emery’s side secured a Europa Conference league berth whilst also playing a key role in the Spanish outfit making it all the way to the Champions League semi-finals where they would lose to Liverpool 5-2 over the two legs.

Now, according to reports, Lo Celso is set to make his Villarreal switch from Tottenham permanent this summer.

The 26-year-old has impressed while on loan in Spain, and Unai Emery would like to bring the midfielder to the club on a permanent basis.

Tottenham brought the Argentine in January 2020 for £45m but his career in north London never really got going and Spurs are prepared to take a £28m loss on him to shift him out of the club, netting them a £17m fee.

And whilst that is a rather big loss on a player who only joined the club two and a half years ago, Spurs’ transfer dealings have improved a lot since then, meaning that £17m will likely be put to much better use.

Elsewhere, Steven Bergwijn could also be heading towards the exit door at Tottenham:
