Newcastle United are currently lagging behind Tottenham and Manchester United in the race for Christian Eriksen’s signature, according to reports in England.

Eriksen spent a fruitful six months with Brentford after joining them in January, but has already told them that he will not be extending his time at the Community Stadium as he looks to return to the top of the game following his cardiac arrest during Euro2020 twelve months ago.

And, to that end, despite Newcastle United’s interest in the Dane, it is Tottenham and Manchester United that hold all the cards as they look to add some creativity to their sides.

That is according to the Northern Echo, who report that ‘Newcastle’s recruitment team have been in touch with his representatives’ but that ‘Manchester United and Tottenham have held more substantive talks with Eriksen and his agents, and at this stage, the two clubs are regarded as the favourites to pull off a deal.’

Tottenham leading the race?

And, as per a report in the Times, it is Tottenham who are leading Manchester United for their former midfielder, with Eriksen having both spent time at Tottenham previously and worked with Antonio Conte during his time at Inter Milan.

By contrast, there is no clear space for him in the Manchester United midfield, with both Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes likely to occupy the preferred roles of the Dane, and Frenkie de Jong tipped to join them, which would provide added competition.

As a result, it seems as though Eriksen could be heading back to north London.
