Leeds United and Southampton are both set to battle it out for 18-year-old midfielder Romeo Lavia, as per the Athletic.

The 18-year-old Belgian midfielder, who plays in the position occupied by Rodri in the first team, made his senior debut last season in the FA and EFL Cups, and is highly rated by those at the Etihad.

However, with Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips seemingly on his way to Manchester from Leeds this summer, despite no deal having yet been agreed, Lavia could be used as a potential sweetener in any deal for the Englishman.

However, they would have to outbid Southampton for his service.s

‘The two clubs rate the 18-year-old highly and it is thought Manchester City are reluctant to let him depart, but view a potential deal as a way to offset any bid they may make for Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips’, the Athletic report.

Southampton look to continue project youth

Of course, Southampton are no strangers to sounding out young talent, having fielded former Chelsea duo Tino Livramento and Armando Broja for much of last season despite their tender age.

Both caught the eye, with Broja returning to Stamford Bridge after a successful loan spell to perhaps even feature for the Blues next season.

And, continuing in that vein already this season with the signing of Gavin Bazunu, they could look to outbid Leeds for Lavia.

The 18-year-old could be playing Premier League football next season.
