Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo pocketed a handsome sum “well into six figures” days before he told United he wanted to leave, according to reports.

Over the last week or so it has been made clear that Cristiano Ronaldo is eyeing a Manchester United exit.

The Red Devils’ failure to secure Champions League football last season, along with United’s floundering in the transfer market, is said to have led to Ronaldo wanting to leave the club.

The striker did not return for pre-season training on Monday when he was expected to, with family reasons cited as to why.

And then, on Thursday, it was reported that Ronaldo had been given permission to miss Manchester United’s pre-season tour, which kicks off on Tuesday afternoon with a clash vs bitter rivals, Liverpool.

Despite it seemingly being clear to Ronaldo for some time that he wants to leave the club, according to The Sun, the Portuguese star took a bonus when the second year of his contract kicked in at the end of June.

A United source told The Sun: “The contracts all renew at the start of July and then the news about Cristiano wanting to leave came out.”

He added: “He’s done nothing wrong, but a few people have suggested the timing of it all might not be a coincidence and Ronny could have revealed his wish to leave weeks ago.”

As mentioned above, Ronaldo has technically done nothing wrong, but his decision to still accept the bonus is not expected to go down too well with United fans anyway.

Has Ronaldo tarnished his United legacy?
