Newcastle see Botman bid turned away
Newcastle United are in desperate need of a new defender in this transfer window.
The current crop at the back have conceded 42 goals so far this season, and shown themselves to be well below par.
And though they brought in Kieran Trippier last week, they still are on the hunt for a centre-back or two.
That man will not be Lille’s Sven Botman, however, with talks having broken down after the French club opted not to sell.
? Newcastle pursuit of Sven Botman looks all-but over. Lille refusing to consider sale so #NUFC turning focus to other candidates. Dutchman was top centre-back target + keen but #LOSC not engaging in talks + intend to keep 21yo until summer @TheAthleticUK https://t.co/nE1R4pU2fE

Meanwhile, there remain questions over Monaco man Benoit Badiashile, who is currently out injured.

From today’s medical tests, AS Monaco expect Badiashile to be back with the team in 2-3 weeks. Timing will be key to understand next steps.

However, they have stepped up their efforts for another target.
Pace steps up for Diego Carlos
Now, as per the generally reliable Jason Burt of The Telegraph, Newcastle have stepped up their pursuit of another defender ahead of their relegation six-pointer with Watford, making a second bid for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.

However, they are still waiting for a response from the La Liga side, who are set to potentially lose both Carlos and Jules Kounde in the next six months.
Will the Magpies get a deal done before the Watford clash?
